Fertiliser Handling and Storage in Estonia
Rail wagon unloading and bulk storage of Fertiliser in Dome Silos.
The project consisted of a new fertiliser handling facility for AS DBT at the Port of Muuga, Tallinn, Estonia. AS-C Projects was awarded the contract for the full MEC system design of all mechanical, structural, electrical and control elements. AS-C also supplied all mechanical, electrical and control components for the new facility as well as upgrading and integrating the control system for the old warehouse system.
Four new 40m diameter dome silos were chosen for their insulation and product quality retention. These have provided AS DBT with 70,000mt additional fertilizer storage capacity. The domes expand DBT’s capabilities greatly to unload rail wagons, store and load out to ship a range of fertilizer products from Russian factories. DBT is already an established and leading shipper in the Baltic regions of fertilisers destined for Western Europe and the Americas.
In detail the new facility includes:-
A new rail unloading station capable of unloading wagons on two lines into hoppers below.
Two 2-metre wide belt feeders with variable speed control to allow optimum flow rates for the range of fertilizers and product densities handled by DBT. This provides easily cleaned and more reliable rail intake facilities.
Transfer belt conveyors in enclosed gantries which deliver material to the four domes through chutework and diverter valves. All bucket elevators and chain conveyors have been designed out of the system to prevent downtime, material damage and cross contamination, and to maximise ease of cleaning.
Four concrete dome silos of 40-metre diameter.
Product reclaim systems in each dome to automatically recover material from storage. The systems incorporate 32 large stainless steel slide valves located in the floors of the domes. Vibrating grids persuade stubborn product to flow.
Reclaim and transfer belt conveyors to deliver the fertilizer to DBT’s existing export facility.
Associated buildings, transfer towers and gantries.
As well as being a coastal environment with winter temperatures well below zero, a number of the fertilizers handled at the site are both hygroscopic and highly corrosive. We have paid close attention to these adverse factors in the design of the facility. All material handling equipment is designed to be self-cleaning and product traps are designed out of the material routes. Certain fabrications and many parts are designed and supplied in stainless steel and mild steel parts have been coated with high specification paint systems.
DBT placed the contract for the design and component supply of the domes themselves with the US Company Dome Technology, who have many years experience in this field and a number of plants operational in the Baltic area.
AS-C are perhaps best known for their experience in the handling of grain, but as this contract demonstrates we have extensive capabilities in handling other products.
